Georges Bataille on Jean-Paul Sartre on Jean Genet This week's archive article in the Times Literary Supplement is Georges Bataille's review of Jean-Paul Sartre's Saint Genet, his 1952 study of the life and work of Jean Genet. Among the consequential works of M. Sartre the most recent to appear is certainly the most singular. Sartre’s answer was: “Jean Genet.” After which Sartre went on to speak of Genet, and suddenly became himself. For Sartre, it seems to me, is himself when he praises or decries; he needs moral pretexts to show his wit, his eloquence. Sartre’s own rhetorical flourishes are underpinned by a philosophy that one either sympathises with or finds a contradiction in its own terms. “The secret of homosexuality,” Sartre tells us of Sartre’s book, Saint Genet, is itself an exposé on the thought and moral psychology of the French writer, activist, and thief, Jean Genet.
